If you recall the short-lived Cubana restaurant in Clifton, you’ll know exactly where Riviera Maya Mexican Cuisine opened up recently at 2206 Frankfort Ave.

If you at there, you’ll recognize the space easily, but the food and service are quite a bit different.

The menu is a blended hybrid of sorts, a Mayan-Latin-Mexican selections something as middle of the road as tacos with beans and rice, or you can branch out with a dish called Cochinita Pibil, which is tender pork simmered in citrus juices and Mayan spices.

Insider Louisville’s Kevin Gibson called food presentations a pleasant surprise: dishes served on square white platters that contrast to the food’s vibrant colors; views of others’ foods that will make your mouth water as others’ plates are carried past your table.

“There are also six vegetarian dishes, a traditional Cubano sandwich, shrimp ceviche, and several versions of fajitas, including the tempting Maya Fajitas, which comes with steak, chicken, shrimp and chorizo,” Gibson wrote. “The Chimichanga Riviera Maya looked tasty as well, as it is made with shrimp, scallops and imitation crab meat.”
