Ron Smith, owner, of The Root Celllar, a two-unit, year-round local produce market (in Germantown and Old Louisville), wants to take his bounty on the road, well into Louisville’s West End.

Smith recently launched a Kickstarter campaign aimed to raise $10,000 to fund the operation, dubbed Root Mobile. The money will help outfit a former TARC bus with refrigeration units. The truck will be powered by vegetable oil-burning diesel engine.

“Part of our secondary mission is to try to reach out and transform food deserts. So we want to bring food to areas in the community that have limited access to fresh, local food,” Smith told WFPL.org. “There are people in neighborhoods in the West End that want fresh local food. So, when people are hamstringed by transportation and access, the best thing to do is take it right to them.”
