Cincinnati based Skyline Chili is offering a free coney Thursday to kick off the season for their hometown Cincinnati Reds.

Opening Day for the Cincinnati Reds is Thursday, March 28, and you can visit any participating Louisville area Skyline Chili location on the 28th and enjoy a free Cheese Coney with the purchase of any beverage (one free Coney per customer, per visit).

Skyline’s Free Coney Day honors the 150th season of Reds baseball. When Harry Wright’s Red Stockings took their positions in 1869, they became America’s first-ever professional, salaried baseball team. The club’s highest-paid player earned $1,400, or $2.5 million in 2019 dollars.

In 1949 a Greek immigrant named Nicholas Lambrinides launched Skyline Chili, his own popular-priced Queen City spin on a dish renowned since the 1920s for its sheer melting pot Americanness. The utterly unique Cincinnati-style chili emerged as a savory Mediterranean-spiced interpretation served over pasta with onions, beans, cheese or all three.

For the uninitiated, Skyline’s Cheese Coney is a proprietary hot dog served in a steamed bun, slathered with mustard and chili, sprinkled with onion and crowned with a mound of shredded cheddar.

Don’t forget a few shakes of Skyline’s signature hot sauce on your free Coney and ponder this critical question: Can Reds mainstay Joey Votto return to his 2017 form in the three-hole with newly acquired Yasiel Puig batting cleanup behind him?
