What we know is this: Lonnie and Diane Edwards will retire in late October. In the interim, it’s business as usual at their legendary Lonnie’s Best Taste of Chicago (121 St. Matthews Ave. in St. Matthews), probably with a few victory laps thrown into the mix.
Note that they’re open to selling the business, and if you’re game, let ’em know and get the negotiations rolling.
In F&D’s Summer 2024 print edition, our editor-in-chief Marty Rosen surveyed Lonnie’s. The Chicago hot dog and its regional companion, the Italian beef sandwich, traditionally were examples of American classics best experienced on their home turf — until these two Chicagoans came to Louisville.
THE LOCAL: Lonnie and Diane Edwards, who moved from Chicago to Louisville in 2001, opened a restaurant on Westport Road, then moved to St. Matthews, where they have since established Lonnie’s Best Taste of Chicago as an exceptional model of everyday excellence for more than twenty years.
