Fitness and beer might not go together as much as we all wish it did, but it does for Halloween! The Jewish Community Center (The J), 3600 Dutchmans Lane, is hosting Beer, Bourbon and Bluegrass Sunday, October 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. for ages 21 plus. Tickets for The J’s very first Brewfest can be purchased online for $5 in advance or $10 at the door; food and drinks are sold separately.
The fun will go down outside at the J’s Klein Pavilion, giving attendees a chance to enjoy the fall weather while drinking a selection of beers from local breweries, enjoying music and playing games. There will also be bottles for sale such as He-Brew’s Messiah Brown Ale (which cannot be bought in Kentucky and had to be specially imported for the event) and a selection from the Chicago-based Moody Tongue, whose owners grew up in Louisville and whose beers include creative flavors such as Peeled Grapefruit Pilsner and Caramelized Chocolate Churro Baltic Porter.
Local bands No Tools Loaned and Bullitt County Grass will provide bluegrass music throughout the afternoon. There will be commemorative beer steins available for purchase, which can also be used for games – such as stein races and stein hoists. Heaven Hill will provide bourbon and there will be food including hot dogs, sausages, sauerkraut, pretzels, and more.
“We hope that Brewfest will bring people together to enjoy good food and drinks while also having a few opportunities to learn something, whether it’s about the differences between different beers and bourbons or about Jewish connections to beer. There’s actually a rich history of Jews and beer production, and almost all of the beers we’re serving have either a Jewish connection, a Louisville connection, or both,” said Michael Fraade, the J’s Jewish Outdoor, Food, and Environmental Education Director.
