The market for high-quality coffee, locally roasted and brewed to order, continues to be strong, if the recent opening of two new such places, one downtown and one in the South End, are indicators. Press on Market has opened at 252 E. Market St., and Stomping Grounds Coffee company is opening soon at 10019 Dixie Hwy. in Valley Station.
Press on Market has opened in a space in the Nucleus research park, a medical research group affiliated with the University of Louisville Foundation. Press on Market is owned by Bruce Lake, who ran the Anchorage Café until its recent closing.
Lake is serving Argo Brothers coffee. Locating the new business in the Nucleus complex provides a gathering place for the campus, a place where employees and visitors can meet and exchange ideas. There is also a meeting room attached to the coffee shop, and an outdoor patio in a courtyard.
Small batch, artisanal coffee houses have been largely an urban phenomenon, but soon Valley Station will have a taste of locally roasted coffee in a coffee-house setting when David and Julie Kennedy open Dixie Highway’s first independently-owned coffee shop.
The Kennedys, who now live in Beechmont, are originally from Valley Station. Their coffee house, to be called Stomping Grounds Coffee Co., will be their first business venture. David is the pastor of a church in the South End, and he and his wife have long hoped to provide a gathering place for area residents that is affordable and would not require them to buy a meal to get together.
Stomping Grounds will serve Sunergos coffees. After training at the Sunergos’s Preston St. store, and some renovation of the space they found, they are now ready to open their own place.
