Gonzalo Cruz opened Chilakiles Mexican Restaurant in 2018. It was popular, but the pandemic intervened and Cruz was compelled to close the eatery.
Now he is preparing to open Good Morning Breakfast & Brunch at 1971 Brownsboro Rd. in Clifton Heights (formerly Virtue Bar & Lounge; ETA: June), and plans on reviving certain of the menu items from Chilakiles.
As it turns out, Michael L. Jones profiled Chilakiles for Food & Dining Magazine back in 2019. His article about the “old” provides solid background information for the “new.”

Earlier this week, Jones charted Cruz’s newest course, picking up the story for Louisville Business First.
New Mexican breakfast and brunch spot opening in Clifton
(Cruz) has a message for local diners who miss his Golden Tres Leches pancakes and breakfast tortas – it’s all coming back…“(Misael Nuñez) and I are opening this restaurant similar to Chilakiles, but we updated many things,” Cruz said. “We hope to give you the best breakfast dishes in combination with the Mexican restaurant (staples).”
Cruz said his new establishment will serve breakfast and brunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. before adding street tacos and other dishes to the menu until 10 p.m. Also like Chilakiles, Cruz will be working with brothers – Roberto, a chef, and Nestor, who was a waiter and manager at his brother’s old restaurant.
