Half Peach Café, serving one of the few vegan and gluten-free menus in town, has opened at the beginning of the year at 4121 Oechsli Ave. in St. Matthews, In addition to soups, salads, sandwiches and bowls, there are daily hot specials such curried potatoes, curried rice, soy-beef and bell pepper stir fry, Szechuan tofu and quinoa with brown rice.
Some dishes, like a taco salad bowl, are familiar, though here the chef uses ground nuts instead of ground beef for the protein component. Vegetables burgers are made with various components, such as black-eyed peas, and served with a side of tortilla chips.
Other regular menu items include an Italian bean sausage sandwich, spicy fried mushroom drumstick, 15-bean chili, and a curried chickpea salad.
Half Peach is also a bakery, offering cakes, cookies and other bakery items made without animal products and gluten-free. On the menu, too, are smoothies and a wide range of teas.
Half Peach Café is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
