Butchertown—whose main business is pork processor Swift—is hosting Porktoberfest, a cooking competition and festival, on Friday, Oct. 11. The event will be held from 5-10 p.m.at 1205 East Washington St.

According to a news release, this “barbeque and pork inspired culinary competition” will feature live music by Hog Operation and Johnny Berry, local brew from Apocalypse Brewery and food samples from more than 15 of Louisville’s finest restaurants.

It says vegetarian options are also available, though I’m not sure why. Maybe they should host a second event called Soytoberfest.

Just sayin’.

Admission is free and proceeds will benefit the Butchertown Neighborhood Association Inc.

Participating restaurants include Atria, Cellar Door Chocolates, Decca, Farm to Fork, Harvest, Holy Grale, the soon-to-be open Jack Knife, Momma’s Pickles Mustard and BBQ, Monkey Wrench, Morels, RYE, St. Charles Exchange, Stellar Sweets, The Bristol Bar & Grille and Wiltshire.

A cash prize will be awarded to the winner of the five categories: Best Overall ($1,000); People’s Choice ($500); Best Vegetarian ($500); Most Creative ($500); and Best Dessert ($500).

Voting will be administered by ballot and each attendee will receive one ballot upon entry to the event. In addition to the cash, all winners will receive an awesome Porktoberfest Trophy.

Just so you know who to thank, the 2013 Butchertown Porktoberfest is sponsored by the participating restaurants, as well as the Eye Care Institute, Proud & Proud PLLC, White Clay, Tachau Meek, Bittner’s, Why Louisville, The Pointe and 9th District Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh.
