Perhaps the cold weather will have retarded the blossoming of the  dogwoods enough so that that mystical concurrence, Derby and dogwoods in bloom, might actually happen this year.

As we wait to see, Derby Festival events are getting under way.  On Monday, April 7 at 5:30 p.m., Varanese, 2106 Frankfort Ave., will host the 3rd annual Tale of the Horse cocktail competition.

Bartenders from restaurants and lounges across the city will gather to create a cocktail suitable for post-Derby socializing, one that will, in the words of the contest sponsor, MyDerbyLove.com, be “designed to bring its consumer back to life after surviving weeks of Derby activities, parties, wins and losses.”

A panel of distinguished judges (yet to be determined, but F&D publisher John Carlos White has been deemed distinguished enough in the past to be tapped for the honor) will have the arduous but satisfying task of blind sampling all the concoctions and deciding the top three winning drinks.  The creative bartenders behind each winning entry will get cash prizes.

This event is free and open to the public, and will include appetizers, drink specials and giveaways. Visit MyDerbyLove.com for more information.
