Feeling the need of his Catholic patrons to keep to Lenten dietary restrictions, and yet to have a nice meal out, John Varanese again is offering a menu special at his namesake restaurant, Varanese, 2106 Frankfort Ave. Two diners can enjoy a meatless 3-course dinner for $50 every Friday until Easter (which is April 16 this year).

The special menu will offer a choice of mixed baby greens salad with sliced cucumbers, shaved red onions and grape tomatoes and caramelized onion vinaigrette; or a salad of Romaine lettuce tossed with roasted garlic and Parmesan dressing topped with fried polenta croutons. Entrée choices are pecan-encrusted white bass atop whipped sweet potatoes with a honey butter sauce; grilled salmon smothered with caramelized mandarin orange sauce served over cream cheese grits; or pan-seared gulf shrimp with cream cheese grits finished with a roasted corn butter sauce. Dessert is a toffee and marshmallow bread pudding.

The regular-priced menu will also feature two fish entrée specials during the Lenten season.
