Bakeries are enjoying a moment, and thanks to the ongoing diligence of our friend and former colleague Michael L. Jones at Louisville Business First, we’ve learned that the same people who previously brought us Pizza AF, then Breakfast AF, have kept the brand extensions coming to gentrifying Germantown with a new bakery that opened earlier this month: Baked AF at 1010 Goss Ave., next door to the other two AFs.

But what I don’t know is the meaning of “AF,” so with the always helpful assistance of the Internet, here are my Top 20 translations of Baked AF (as opposed to AI, which stands for Alloisoleucine Isoleucine, or at least should).

Okay, okay; I know perfectly well what the cool kids mean when they say “AF”, and the Urban Dictionary stands ready to enlighten those readers who are curious about all the chortling. Speaking only for myself, Baked Atrial Fibrillation strikes me as funniest; then again, I’m the guy who named his college intramural basketball team Mute Nostril Agony (with apologies to Jim Morrison).

The reporter Jones has been waiting patiently for me to arrive at a point — any point will do — so let’s get to owner Allan Rosenberg’s non-AI-generated AF explanation.

New sweets shop Baked AF joins Pizza AF and Breakfast AF in Germantown

For the record, (Allan) Rosenberg said the AF in the restaurant names stand for Allan and Fred (Pizzonia).

Rosenberg said he and his partners opened the new bakery because they are trying to fill a gap in the Goss Avenue food scene.

“We just saw that neighborhood kind of had a need for one,” Rosenberg explained. “[It is] a bakery, but it’s more of a sweet shop, so don’t think savory. We’re not doing baguettes, breads and stuff like that. It’s more cakes, cupcakes, brownies and we’re making our own ice cream.”
