Reporting at Louisville Business First, Joel Stinnett confirms the permanent closure of El Mundo’s original 2345 Frankfort Ave. location, which ran for 28 years until a process of “restructuring” began in January, 2024. We covered it here:
El Mundo’s original location in Clifton will be restructured in Jan., 2024
Founder Bea Chamberlain tells Stinnett that El Mundo (primero) never recovered from the pandemic.
“For 28 years we worked in that building and mostly it brought nothing but joy to us.”
That joy came to an end in December when the restaurant closed due to the lingering financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, said Chamberlain, who, at the time, left the door open for El Mundo to reopen at the location.
However, Chamberlain said that door is now shut, as she and her business partner Chef Mike Boyle have put the 1,616-square-foot building up for sale.
With the Clifton building on the market, El Mundo’s four-year-old “second” location at 1767 Bardstown Rd. in the Highlands is now its flagship.
