Your digital editor strives to be diligent, but every now and then private life intervenes, in this instance my hip replacement surgery two weeks ago, which has gone swimmingly but has been a “business as usual” schedule wrecker for me.

As such, a belated note that the second week of Osteria Italian Seafood’s (1211 Herr Lane) holiday event is ongoing through Christmas Eve. In many ways the Feast of Seven Fishes is where the old world meets the new.

Feast of the seven fishes: An Italian Christmas Eve tradition, by Adam Jones (ItaliaRail)

There are many Italian Christmas traditions including the legend of La Befana, but have you ever heard of the Feast of the Seven Fishes? This tradition connects back to the long-standing Italian tradition of vigilia, a day of fasting that ends with a meal that excludes meat and dairy. After a full day of fasting on Christmas Eve, imagine the vigil night of December 24 as an endless feast of fish and pasta to fill hungry bellies.

Here’s the extended local seven-times-seafood pitch.
