Dog Haus (“The Absolute Würst – Gourmet Hot Dog, Burger, and Sausages”) is a concept that dates to 2010 in Pasadena California, one subsequently formatted for launching franchises nationwide, a proliferation that proceeds apace.

The first Louisville-area Dog Haus location (four others are planned), which is officialy categorized as a Dog Haus Biergarten, is to be located in New Albany at 415 Bank Street.

It’s a building still referred to by vintage New Albanians as the “day old bread store,” later remodeled as the home of New Albanian Brewing Company’s Bank Street Brewhouse (the author’s former business, 2009-2019), then serving as Monnik Beer Co.’s short lived Southern Indiana branch, which closed in 2022.

It is my understanding that Monnik owns the brewing equipment on site and has, or will, remove it for sale, storage or use elsewhere to facilitate the advent of Dog Haus.

Interestingly, the sports mascot of New Albany High School is a bulldog, and given the city’s legendary attachment to its high school sports, this surely constitutes a propitious omen.

We’ve known about the Dog Haus project since at least 2021, widely rumored to be franchised by some (or all) of the folks who brought Chicken Salad Chick to the area.

Dog Haus Executes Franchise Agreement to Bring The Absolute Würst to Louisville and Southern Indiana

As an aside, with a name like Dog (Hund?) Haus Biergarten, I’d expect the Old World lager-style taps to outnumber India Pale Ale by a ratio of something like 5-1. It’s probably unlikely, but a boy can dream.

WDRB has more.

LA-based Dog Haus Biergarten to open location in downtown New Albany

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Fans of burgers, hot dogs and beer will soon have a new spot to check out in southern Indiana…The Los Angeles-based restaurant chain serves gourmet hot dogs, sausages and burgers.

The Dog Haus Biergarten (Facebook page) in New Albany is slated for an official opening next spring. By then, other area locations presumably will have been targeted, and we’ll be back for a look.
