The Twig and Leaf diner in the Highlands has been around forever, it seems, and like many old-time, old-school eateries, it has seen better days. Two new owners, Gibin George and Ferhan Ali are buying Twig and Leaf, 2122 Bardstown Rd., with a promise of returning it to a semblance of its past glory.
George, a native of India in 2007 and a recent M.B.A. U of L, says he has the support of many people who want to see the iconic diner revamped to once again be an attraction in the neighborhood.
In 2011 the property was almost converted into a chain drugstore, but it has subsequently been named a local landmark, a designation that some preservationists questioned.
The new owners have been working at Twig and Leaf every day to learn the business and understand its operation. They think with its local history, its proximity to Bellarmine and the density of local business traffic, with some cosmetic improvement and more attention to careful food preparation, it should be a viable business.
Twig and Leaf will close Sept. 28 and reopen on Oct. 2. The renovation plans include repainting, installing a TV and jukebox and rejuvenating the classic signage. While wanting to respect the traditions of the American diner menu, the new owners also plan to introduce healthier options to the menu, including wraps, more salad choices, and Mediterranean-inspired foods.
When it reopens, the new hours of operation will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays. It will be open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday.
