Consider this post as an unsolicited testimonial. Admittedly, I’m ranging outside F & D’s customary coverage area, but Madison in Indiana is much closer than Skopje or Tirana in the Balkans, and even inveterate Europhiles like me remain stateside a majority of the time.
Most importantly, if you’re interested in history and somehow have never investigated Madison, then immediately plan a day’s escape.
An Outdoor Museum of Architecture
With more than 133 blocks of outstanding architecture, Madison’s downtown business district is one of the country’s largest National Historic Landmark Districts. Madison’s founders brought with them their own history, which is displayed in the architecture of the homes and buildings that make up this historic gem. Travel America says, “Madison is an outdoor museum of architecture.”
There are a fair number of dining and imbibing choices for a town Madison’s size, and you’ll never go hungry, but be aware of a superlative option for pizza, albeit up “on the hill,” which is to say located outside the historic district downtown.
Brittany’s Brick Oven Pizza (B-Bop)
We are a small mom and pop pizza place. I’m the pop and my beautiful wife of over 30 years is the mom. We are off the beaten the path in a little Bedford stone house. Susan, my wife, handles the front of the house and makes all of our desserts. I make all the dough, sauces, and such and cook your pizza. If you’re the type that likes hole-in-the-wall places, stop by and try one of our pizzas. Have a coke, a local beer or local wine. I would love to meet ya!!
Pizza is the thing, although those desserts are the secret weapons. B-Bop’s is located at 2034 Lanier Drive, with easy vehicular access via Clifty Dr. (Hwy. 62). Google it.
Opening hours are Thursday 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. -9:00 p.m.; and Sunday 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Closed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
My experiences at B-Bop’s have been uniformly excellent. Check it out, tell ’em I sent you, and before or after your meal, head down to the historic district for a stroll. You will not regret it.
