The Brown Hotel’s archetypal Hot Brown is as much a symbol of Louisville as the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs, but while the Kentucky Derby has been postponed until September 5, Hot Browns are available now by way of the Brown Hotel’s new Curbside Service.
The hotel’s curbside menu also features a new item: Hot Brown Pot Pies.
To order curbside at The Brown, call 502-736-3008 after 10:00 a.m. daily.
• Lunch pickup hours: 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
• Dinner pickup hours: 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.
During the COVID-19 crisis we’ve all settled quickly into the curbside carryout routine of ordering meals and paying for them over the phone, but it must be conceded that not every take-away pickup point is located in a parking spot as atmospheric as the Brown Hotel’s bell stand on 4th Street.
And lest we forget the famous story of the Hot Brown …
“In the 1920’s, The Brown Hotel drew over 1,200 guests each evening for its dinner dance. By the wee hours of the morning, guests would grow weary of dancing and make their way to the restaurant for a bite to eat.
“Sensing their desire for something more glamorous than traditional ham and eggs, Chef Fred Schmidt set out to create something new to tempt his guests’ palates. His unique dish? An open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and a delicate Mornay sauce. The Hot Brown was born!”
