Clifton will be down a cheesemonger when Harvey’s (2011 Frankfort Ave, Unit 101) shutters within the next few weeks. Harvey’s began as a cheese shop — “Up to No Gouda” — then recently evolved into an utterly unique Sydney Australia-themed cafe and bar.

The text of the announcement follows.

We’ve got a not so great announcement. The time has come to close our doors BUT don’t worry, you still have time to come see us. We’re not sure yet of the exact date we’re closing (ughh, logistics are hard), but it’ll be within the next few weeks. We’d love if you can make these next weeks our busiest (because ughhh, expenses).

We really tried to make it work & all the love & support & patronage & kind reviews mean so much to us. We also love our team & know this really sucks for them, so if you wanna come & show them some extra TLC, by all means, please do! We know they’ll land on their feet because they’re all amazing & we know we will too.

It’s really a bummer that it’s so hard to sustain a small restaurant when you don’t have deep pockets, but it seems to be our sad truth. Despite all that, we’re happy we gave it a go! And I think we can still consider our endeavor a success. We started this business nearly 5 years ago with 3.5 years as a cheese shop at Logan Street Market & the last year & a half doing our thing on Frankfort Ave. Getting our start, enduring Covid, expanding, struggling, celebrating, morphing, & all the highs & lows that come along with it. I’m so proud of my husband @brent_mills for following his dream to go for it & give it his all, while also juggling the needs of our family. We won’t look back with regret, but rather that was a pretty cool thing we got to do that will always be part of our story.

With all that said, anyone looking for a turn key restaurant?! We’ve got a lot of fantastic equipment ready to go. We’d love to make a deal with someone that wants it all. We’ve really loved this spot & hope to see the next business there really thrive!

In the meantime, stay tuned for some fun things happening before we officially close. We love & appreciate y’all! Thank you, friends. Thank you, Louisville. ❤️

Long ago in Vienna, I chanced upon an Australian pub (“there are no kangaroos in Austria”) and was intrigued, having never visited the world’s sixth-largest country. I still haven’t. When Harvey’s announced its cafe and bar concept, this memory came bubbling back, reminding me that there was a time when beer lovers would cite Sparkling Ale as the best known example of an indigenous Australian beer. In turn, this gives me an idea for a future Hip Hops beer column.

But for now, condolences to the owners, cast and crew at Harvey’s. Been there, felt that; each and every time I report a closing, I relive those turbulent emotions.
