Ever been to a clambake?
If not, you’re missing a terrific outdoor cooking event that’s just as common to people living near U.S. Northeast beaches as a cookout down here.
An authentic one includes digging a significant hole in the sand about a couple feet deep and, say, a yard long. Beach rocks are added, then charcoal, which heats the rocks to scalding. Throw on some seaweed, then raw shellfish, potatoes and corn, add some more seaweed and then sea water to produce steam. The whole hole is then covered with a tarp to steam the shellfish.
Sound cool?
It is. And you should go enjoy one for yourself on July 20.
Winston’s Restaurant (3101 Bardstown Road), with the help of its sister businesses, Julep’s Catering and The Bakery (all Sullivan University companies if you didn’t know), is hosting a clambake that Saturday, below a tent set up in the restaurant’s parking lot.
And while there won’t be any holes dug in the parking lot, there will be all the goodies found at a great clambake, plus watermelon and loads o’ beverages. Here’s the menu:
* One whole lobster, clams, shrimp, mussels, corn on the cob, boiled potatoes and slaw (or a grilled steak may be substituted for the seafood, but why would you?); cost is $48 per person, plus tax, gratuity and beverages (cash bar offering local beers, gin and tonic, bourbon, and a handful of batch drink options.)
* A kid’s menu, that includes corn dogs and mac n’ cheese costs $15 plus tax, gratuity and beverages.
Seatings are available at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. For reservations, please call Winston’s at (502) 456-0980.
