The Spring 2024 issue of Food & Dining Magazine is now available in all the familiar places: Louisville area eateries and food shops, newsstands and online.

Apologies for inserting a wee bit of musical irreverence. Kathmandu is Nepal’s capital city in the Himalayas, a destination for 1960s-era hippies in search of legal hashish. I was too young for all that, and consequently Bob Seger made the geographical introductions later, circa 1975.

Reporting at Louisville Business First, Michael L. Jones greets the arrival of Phalcha Coffee at 1001 Mary St. in Germantown.

The owners are the husband and wife team of Bishal Suwal and Kriti Malla, and also sisters Priya and Shristi Ghale; in their native Nepal, the word phalcha means a place for travelers to rest (additionally implying a venue, as for meetings and events).

Phalcha Coffee brings Nepali flavors to Germantown

“We wanted to bring something Nepali to this community,” Suwal said. “My wife’s first job was as a barista in London. After that, she moved to the United States and started working at coffee shops. It’s because of her experience that we opened. It seems like most commercial coffee shops here, it’s about drive-thru coffee. We didn’t want that vibe.

“We want someone to sit here and relax while they enjoy their coffee. That is why it is called Phalcha.”

Light food items are available at Phalcha, where the current opening hours are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.
