Union 15, which in late 2019 began purveying pizza at Colonial Gardens in the South End, has officially closed shop, effective Saturday, January 21. The following explanatory notice appeared at Facebook. Interestingly, Union 15’s reference to a “broken economy” has been emphasized by several local news outlets.

Here’s the text:

Union 15 Family,

It is with a heavy heart that we share with you Union 15 will close our doors to the public this Saturday night at 10pm.

We fought a good fight but we can’t overcome a broken economy, extremely high food costs, and an upcoming year of no forgivness in either direction.

We appreciate YOU, our community and all of the support we have received since we opened the doors winter of 2019.

We made it through a Global pandemic and a job crisis when it all seemed impossible because of your support!

We are so grateful.

We have had interest from several other businesses in occupying our space here at Colonial Gardens who will continue serve our community.

We believe in the Southend, the families who live here, and the incredible relationships we see each and every day.

At Louisville Business First, reporter Michael L. Jones offers context.

Union 15 is the second restaurant to close in the Colonial Gardens development. Biscuit Belly closed its restaurant there in October last year, and a replacement has not yet been named…Union 15 was the second concept to open in the development following Taco Luchador. The pizza restaurant was founded by Paul Blackburn and Alex Tinker, both natives of South Louisville who also opened Citizen 7 in Norton Commons, Parlour in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and Couvillion in Germantown. Both Citizen 7 and Couvillion are also closed.
