I’m so frightfully old that I can remember all the way back to April 2023, when the former Gold Bar space at 1601 Story Ave. was going to be redeveloped into a concept called The Sphinx, which had me looking forward to exotic Egyptian cuisine until it became evident that my culinary expectations seldom align with concepts emerging from Shelbyville … and of course, there’s nothing at all wrong with that.
Different strokes, after all. There are a great many paths, etc.
One of these paths now connects the South End’s Back Deck BBQ (801 W. Kenwood Dr.) to this building where The Sphinx did not materialize, and where Back Deck’s owner Chan Nelson plans to open his slightly reformatted second location, Back Deck Bar & Lounge, in November.

“The one in Butchertown is just going to be a bar and lounge, but its still going to be barbecue-based eating,” Nelson told Louisville Business First in a recent interview. “I’m working on the menu. The menu will be similar, but it’ll be different because It’ll fit more of the bar and lounge feel.”
Befitting the aura of mystery surrounding the mythological sphinx, we’re fated to never, ever know what might have emerged in this Butchertown space where Back Deck will now establish itself.
All I know is that no koshari is coming. We may need to look to Buechel for that.
