Alan Rupp (“The Pie Man”) died on June 7 at 70 years of age. His grandparents created the first Derby Pie in 1954, and over five decades Rupp built Kern’s Kitchen into one of the area’s signature family-owned businesses.

The text from the Fb announcement:

We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved President, Alan Rupp. His contributions to Kentucky tradition and hospitality spanned over 50 years. He will leave an immense void in his family and friends hearts and the entire Louisville community. He was loved and cherished by so many. He believed in passion and purpose and we will carry that tradition on in his memory with all we have here at Kern’s Kitchen. We hope you will cherish your loved ones and share a piece of Derby Pie® with them as often as you can. Service details (and obituary are) here.

Truly, the legacy lives on. Kern’s Kitchen asks that in lieu of flowers, consider a donation to APRON.

Verily, unless Kern’s Kitchen bakes it, it’s not Derby-Pie™
