As we await the arrival of the Summer 2025 edition of Food & Dining Magazine, which is coming in early June (the fevered hum of production is audible, briefly interrupted by the inevitable Kentucky Derby hangover), a fundamental truth about life in Kentucky taps us gently on our shoulders.
It’s a bourbon reminder, of course, and our columnist Sara Havens takes a lateral step away from her customary role as “The Bar Belle” to lead a discussion.
One Bourbon Bucket List item many aficionados chase is the barrel pick experience. Typically only reserved for liquor store and bar/restaurant owners, the affair can be similar to visiting Disney World for these whiskey connoisseurs. The distiller pulls back the curtain and rolls out the red carpet to a truly behind-the-scenes escapade that involves doing and tasting things the general public doesn’t have access to.
The good news is there are a handful of distilleries in Kentucky that are opening up this awesome experience to everyday folks like you and me.
