Hi, I’m Roger, currently jack of all trades at Food & Dining Magazine, but at heart a beer and travel writer whose inaugural rodeo came during the first Raygun administration.

I’ve learned a great deal during my 42 years of diligent attention to beer, so before we take a gander at the advent of Trellis Brewing at 827 Logan St., here’s a tip to my ink-stained brethren: when charged with writing about beer, the better the quality of beer, the less need to use the word “cold” as an adjective.

In fact — this may come as a surprise to vast swaths of the American public — there is no law stipulating the use of the word “cold” as a beer descriptor each and every time beer is mentioned. It’s not in the Constitution, and if your beer isn’t cold enough, Kentucky or Indiana regulatory authorities won’t take your call.

(In Bavaria, traditional breweries keep an immersion heater handy for patrons to warm their beers; in winter, the tile stove in the corner also is available for use.)

A better way to approach temperature in any discussion of beer is to ask whether it is appropriate for the particular style.

Cold beer this, cold beer that. My advice, just as Bob Newhart has suggested …

Granted, mass-market light lagers (Lite) and price-point-label-art-fetish corn-coctions (PBR) are best served very cold because they’re designed to be little more than alcoholic soft drinks for the rarely discerning, and icebergs happily mask their fundamental olfactory futility.

But the same isn’t true of “craft” beer, as intended to sink or swim on actual beer character, which isn’t a thing to be dulled by excessive chilling.

Thank you for attending my TED Talk. Don’t forget to visit the gift shop on the way out. I’m not much on the use of the word “brew” either, but that digression can wait.

Trellis Brewing’s grand opening is this coming weekend, 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (June 21st – 23rd). At LEO Weekly, Sydney Catinna provides solid requisite introductions: A Long-Awaited Louisville Brewery Opens This Weekend.

The brand new Trellis Brewing opens this weekend in Louisville’s historic Smoketown.

Located at the former Merchant’s Ice Tower property, this project has been in the works for almost 2 years. After a lengthy process which included installing brewing equipment and a new flooring, plus planting trees on the outdoor patio, the brewery is officially ready to begin pouring.

Stop by the grand opening Saturday, June 22 or Sunday, June 23, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., for cold brews and local food trucks.
