For those unfamiliar with Angilo’s Pizza (1725 Berry Blvd.), a recent contribution by our colleague Kevin Gibson tells the story.
The Taste Bud: The enduringly gooey mozzarella ambiance of Angilo’s Pizza
As oft times before, Michael L. Jones laps the field and is first past the post with the story of another unfortunate closing.
Angilo’s Pizza closing this month after 60 years in South Louisville (Louisville Business First)
A South Louisville pizza parlor is closing this month after nearly 60 years in business.
Angilo’s Pizza is located at 1725 Berry Blvd., in the Taylor-Berry neighborhood. Owner Crystal Lay announced through social media in late April that she planned to close the restaurant on May 31.
File under: food costs and utilities.

💔Going out of BUSINESS May31, 2023💔
We are broken hearted to do this but we can NOT keep up with inflation. The extreme price of the LG&E, increased food cost, and all other things that come up in a restaurant constantly – we are not able to keep up with it. Things that used to cost a few hundred dollars now cost thousands. It’s unreal to me and it makes it impossible. We have a whole month left, so we are hoping to see a lot of our friends who LOVE Angilos as much as we do.
The reporter Jones quotes the pizzeria owner Lay with this thoughtful coda.
“A lot of people in the area are on a fixed income and they are struggling hard right now. When you’re on a fixed income and inflation hits, you’re in trouble. That don’t leave money for a pizza, it doesn’t leave money for cold beer at the bar … you give up those luxuries. And without my community, you know, we’re nothing.”
