Yesterday we established beyond reasonable doubt that burgoo should be considered as much a part of Kentucky’s legacy of edibles and potables as bourbon.
Edibles & Potables: The burgoomeister, his burgoo, and your contentment
Fittingly, burgoo will be placed atop a pedestal in the glare of a culinary spotlight at the Second Annual Burgoo Bash Pro-Am, a cook-off sponsored by Monk’s Road Bourbon & Gin, to be held at Against the Grain Brewery & Smokehouse on Saturday, March 18 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., with a portion of proceeds benefiting APRON Inc.
APRON Inc. was created in 2011 to help provide financial relief to food and beverage industry workers in the Louisville, Kentucky metropolitan area who find themselves in need during times of crises. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, APRON Inc. has stepped up with a far greater volume of assistance to local workers than ever before.
Burgoo, a hearty and uniquely Kentuckian single-bowl stew, is interpreted in a multitude of ways. They’ll all be welcomed for consideration at the Burgoo Bash, where participants will compete for top honors in three categories: Most Creative Recipe, People’s Choice, and Best in Show (selected by a panel of celebrity judges).
Prizes include trophies, gift certificates, and perhaps most importantly, bragging rights.
The competition is open to the first 20 registered participants, with 15 slots reserved for home chefs and five for restaurants. For $10 per person, Burgoo Bash attendees can taste all the burgoos and vote for their favorite. For the burgoo cookoff’s rules and regulations, visit here.
Also, in conjunction with the Burgoo Bash, Against the Grain is hosting a pro-am bourbon cocktail-making contest. Both professional and amateur divisions will include 15 contestants. Contestants will be given seven minutes to prepare a bourbon cocktail before a panel of judges.
The amateur division will be held on Monday, March 13th at 10am. The professional division will occur on Tuesday, March 14th at 10am. The winner of the amateur division will have their cocktail featured on our menu at Against The Grain Public House for the Burgoo Bash. For the professional division, we are offering $500 cash, other prizes, and a Log Still Distillery tour experience for your team.
