The West End has known about Southern Express for a few years now, but the formerly carry-out only spot at 23rd and Market now has a sit-down location at 418 W. Oak St. serving up classic soul food in Styrofoam containers to eat in or take out, at rock-bottom prices. Diners build their own meal at $1 per item.
The offerings vary day to day, but the range of dishes offered are all drawn from familiar Southern home cooking. A recent day’s choices included fried chicken, cooked cabbage, fried whiting and pork roast. Other dishes available during the week are fried or smothered pork chops, baked or barbecued chicken, macaroni and cheese, pepper steak, rib tips, meat loaf, chitlins, black-eyed peas, corn, collard greens and – every day – cornbread.
You can finish off your meal with an ice cream cone, also for $1 per scoop. Southern Express Soul Food is open daily from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
