Let the beer festivals begin! There were plenty of them last year, and the first of 2015, the Tailspin Ale Fest, is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20 and 21. Last year’s event drew interested imbibers from Alaska, Washington State, Massachusetts and Florida, so organizers are preparing for another diverse and far-flung crowd.
The event will take place in the Louisville Executive Aviation Center–a big, drafty hangar–at Bowman Field. The Friday event is called The Barrel Roll, which will be limited to 1000 tickets. It will be a chance to talk with representatives of the dozens of breweries who will participate, as well as sample limited barrel-aged beers, Bourbons and craft cocktails. Food will be a catered tapas menu prepared by the Olé Restaurant Group, owners of El Luchador, Mussel and Burger Bar, and Guacamole, and music provided by the Pimps of Joytime.
The Saturday event will sell 1,600 tickets. Five booths by featured breweries Sweetwater, Traveler, Tin Man, Flat 12 and West Sixth, will be joined by representative samplings of dozens of other craft breweries from across the nation. Attendees can look forward to unusual brews such as Flat 12’s Pinko Russian Imperial Stout aged in Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year barrels. Proceeds from the event will benefit Dare to Care food bank.
