Comfy Cow to Close Clifton Store, by Kevin Gibson

Farewell to a neighborhood icon: The pink icon in Clifton, The Comfy Cow, announced that the location will close soon.

Located at 2221 Frankfort Avenue, the location has been open since 2013, with the still-young ice cream company took over the former site of Genny’s Diner, home of the Sweet Daddy Burger. The company said in a news release that the retail space is simply larger than needed for the business.

“We have been looking for a relocation opportunity to downsize for some time,” owner Chip Hamm said in the announcement on the company’s website. “It’s a great building, but 5,000 square feet is more than we need for just a retail scoop shop.”

The Louisville-based ice cream company also restored a dilapidated Queen Anne house and constructed a commissary kitchen and retail space on the site, combining it with the former Genny’s Diner space.

“Obviously, we love the neighborhood,” Hamm said. “We have been part of the revitalization of Clifton and are actively looking for a relocation site, something smaller for just retail. We are announcing now to give ourselves and the landlord some time to find a replacement.”

In January 2021, the company announced that it was moving its headquarters and production from the Frankfort Avenue location.

“When we opened this building in 2013, we had two, going on three stores,” Hamm added. “Now, we have five stores, logistics for catering and events, and fulfillment of our online delivery. It’s just a different business than the space was designed for.”
