The “IHeartRadio Great Chili Cook Off Fueled by Bulleit Bourbon” is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, October 13, in Clifton. It will be the 5th edition of the fest, or the 30th.
For the uninitiated this takes some explaining, which Sara “The Bar Belle” Havens provided in 2016 at the now sadly defunct Insider Louisville.
The Phoenix Hill Tavern Great Chili Cook-Off was an event Brad Curry always looked forward to. Thousands would descend upon the Highlands music venue and bar for a day of sampling chili and drinking beer. So when Phoenix Hill closed its doors in the summer of 2015, Curry knew he, and his neighborhood of Clifton, had to step up and take the reins.
“I couldn’t let the tradition fade off into the sunset,” says Curry, a real estate and insurance agent.
The Great Chili Cook-Off didn’t miss a beat, as Curry and the Clifton Community Council quickly got to work.
There you have it; the chili cook-off ran for 25 years at Phoenix Hill Tavern, and now the 5th gathering on Frankfort Avenue is due, with the street being closed from Pope Street to State Street for the duration. Festivities begin at noon on October 13 and end at 6:00 p.m.
