For seven years now Big Momma’s Soul Kitchen, at 4532 W. Broadway, has served a free Christmas dinner to everyone who showed up at the door. Last year, over 1000 dinners were provided, and this year several hundred more are expected to line up for the meal of meatloaf, green beans, homemade yams, stuffed chicken, smothered pork chops, ham, cornbread and more. To handle that many diners and that much food, Big Momma’s needs help in the kitchen.
Sheryl Fox, Big Momma’s daughter and manager of the family restaurant, says donations are falling short. Big Momma does not intend to turn anyone away, but she hopes others in the community can help so the whole burden does not fall all on her.
Big Momma’s Soul kitchen is accepting donations of canned goods and monetary donations so they can purchase food and supplies in bulk. Big Momma is also looking for volunteers to help serve the food.
The free Christmas dinner will be served from noon to 6 p.m. on Christmas Day.
