Monday, March 16 at 6 p.m., local food and beverage expert Kevin Gibson and Vince Cain of Great Flood Brewery will discuss “Louisville Beer: Derby City History on Draft” at the Great Flood Brewery, 2120 Bardstown Road. The lecture is sponsored by the Filson Historical Society.

Today Louisville is known for its Bourbons, but before Prohibition, Louisville, with its large German immigrant community, held its own in the brewing industry, competing with more well-known beer-centric cities such as  St. Louis and Milwaukee.

The lecture will discuss the colorful history of German brewing traditions and beer gardens, the influence of the big three city breweries, Falls City, Fehr’s and Oertel’s, and the rise of the contemporary local craft beer revival.

At the event Gibson, author of the recent book “Louisville Beer:: Derby City History on Draft.” will trace Louisville’s beer history with anecdotes, interviews and photos. Cain,  co-owner of Great Flood Brewery, will discuss recent brewing trends.

The cost of the lecture is $10 for Filson members and $15 for non-members. Tickets include a flight of four beer tastings. To register, call 635-5083 or go to filsonhistorical.org/events.
