When Cumberland Brews closed up shop in early October after a 19-year run as Louisville’s second most venerable “micro” brewery, eatery and gathering place (after Bluegrass Brewing Company), things moved quickly, as Against the Grain Brewery announced its intent to take over Cumberland’s operation at 1576 Bardstown Road and develop its own neighborhood-oriented Public House.

AtG’s co-owner Sam Cruz wrote, “I’m honored at the opportunity for Against the Grain Brewery to grab the torch held by Mark and the Cumberland family to carry on the tradition of great local beer on Bardstown Road. Cheers to an amazing run and big shoes to fill!”

Six weeks have passed, the refit is complete, and today the task of filling those shoes begins in earnest as the redubbed Public House by Against the Grain makes its debut today.

Please note that until next week, it’s drinks only (kitchen equipment is still in transit) during listed hours.

Public House by Against the Grain had a stealth opening on Wednesday evening, with one attendee providing this report:

Had a great time checking out Against the Grain Brewery’s new taproom in the Cumberland Brews location. They did it right, blending the original space, at least 80% intact, with nice touches of AtG along with elements of everything that is Kentucky beer. Big props to them, their beer, and the $2 draft margaritas.

According to a fellow Food & Dining staffer, “All the taps serve AtG brews (to-go growlers are available). The menu features pub grub with a twist, including burgers, paninis, pimento cheese balls and French onion soup. Brunches promise to be destination weekend events.”

Business hours at Public House by Against the Grain (502- 409-9866):

Monday – Thursday: 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.

And, AtG is refurbishing the tiny old-school brewing system, with hopes of bringing it back into operation by January, 2020.
